A digital video recorder is a device that uses a hard drive to record television shows from cable and satellite. Recording from a high-definition DVR onto a computer is similar to recording from a VCR or video camera. Since DVR's don't usually come with software or hardware for directly transferring video files to a computer, you will have to record off the DVR as it's replaying the content. To do this, you will need video capture hardware, such as a video card with video inputs or a USB TV tuner, and video editing software such as Windows Movie Maker.
Step 1
Buy the video and audio cables matching the jack types of the video-capture hardware and the HD DVR. If you're using a USB TV tuner, you will need a digital coaxial cable. If you have some other device or are able to plug directly into your video card, you may need an RCA cable.
Step 2
Connect the video and audio cables from the HD DVR to the video-capture hardware.
Step 3
Open Windows Movie Maker. Click on the "Record" icon that's on the toolbar at the top of the screen. The "Record" dialog box opens.
Step 4
Click on the "Change Device" button in the dialog box, and click "Video Capture Card." Click "Line In" from the video options. If you're using a USB, USB TV tuner or some other USB device, you'll see your device on the options; click it instead of "Line In." Click "Default Audio Device" from the audio options. Click "OK." Check that the "Record" menu says "Video and Audio." If you want Movie Maker to stop recording automatically, change the time on the "Record Time Limit" drop-down menu to the length of your show. If you want to stop recording manually, verify that the box isn't checked.
Step 5
Click on the "Record" button on the right side of the screen.
Step 6
Press "Play" on the HD DVR.
Step 7
Stop recording when the show is finished. If you did not set a recording time, press the Record button again. Once you have started recording, this button will have changed into a Stop button.
